How to extend a windows 2003/2008 disk size

This article provides guidance to extend the size of you hard drive for a windows 2003/2008 hard disk.

!Warning! Before attempting this procedure you should power your VM off and cold clone it so you have a backup for restoration!

!Warning! Once you increase the size of the Hard Disk in a VM you can not decrease it. Make sure your desired size will be permanent! Also drives with mutiple partitions may not be able to be extend in all circumstances, in this case research before attempting to extend the drive!

  1. Power down your VM.
  2. Confirm the datastore as enough space to perform the changes you will make including the space for a clone.
  3. Clone VM as backup for emergency restoration.
  4. Edit VM settings. Under Hardware TAB. Select the Hard Disk that will have the size increased. On the Right side under Disk Provisioning change the provisioned size to the new Disk Size you would like. Next click on the Options TAB. Select Boot Options. On the Right side select Force Bios Setup Checkbox. Exit Settings.
  5. Attach WinPE (winpe_x86.iso) ISO from ISO datastore Repository. See Aticle http://www.hpchost.com/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=200
  6. Open Console.
  7. Power on VM.
  8. Once the VM enters the BIOS, move to the Boot Options screen. Under boot options move the CDROM drive to the top of the list under boot order. Save and Exit.
  9. Press a key to boot from CD once it appears on the boot screen.
  10. WinPE will now boot.
  11. Once wWinPE has booted there should be a cursor at the command prompt. During the next process you will have to determine the drive, volume, and partition you need to extend by viewing the information from each list command.
  12. Type the following commands below. For Reference view the attached screenshot below from an example. Note where # is typed in the commands you must enter the number from the list command associated with the item you are trying to extend.
  13. >diskpart
  14. >list disk
  15. >select disk #
  16. >list volume
  17. >select volume #
  18. >list partition #
  19. check if there are mutiple partitions and review compatibility accordingly
  20. >extend
  21. >list disk
  22. note the new disk size and free space is zero.
  23. detach ISO from VM
  24. exit program
  25. reboot back into your OS and note the new disk and partition size
